Active Spaces

Active Spaces in Darebin is a project where art and arts based businesses are placed into long term vacant shops to bring economics and people back to the streets.

The project launched during Northern Exposure Festival in 2012 with a series of artworks displayed in the windows of three vacant shops in High Street, Northcote. Since that time Active Spaces has displayed over 40 exhibits in shop windows across Darebin.

Shortly after launching the window exhibits, Active Spaces launched its first pop up shop, Offshoot, in December 2012. Since that time, Active Spaces has supported the establishment of over a dozen pop up shops, initially in central Northcote, and now pushing northwards into shopping strips in Thornbury and Preston.

This activity has transformed the shop windows from poster clad, tagged and unkempt shop windows into shining colourful beacons which are once again contributing to the life, energy and economy of the street.
