Darebin Overview

The City of Darebin stands on 53 square kilometres of land and is five kilometres north of Melbourne’s Central Business District.

The City of Darebin Estimated Resident Population for 2015 is 150,881. Darebin’s population declined steadily from the late 1970s through to the mid-1990s but has grown since and is projected to increase by 8 per cent to 163,871 by 2021.

The median age for Darebin residents as of the 2011 Census was 36, and is expected to increase over time.

In the 2011 Census, 33.7 per cent of Darebin residents stated they were born overseas. The major countries of birth were Italy, Greece, India, China, the United Kingdom and Vietnam.

Darebin’s residents speak a wide range of languages, with 38.7 per cent speaking a language other than English at home. Besides English the most common languages are Italian, Greek, Arabic, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Macedonian, Cantonese, Punjabi and Hindi. Approximately 7.8 per cent of the population do not speak English well or at all.
