Darebin fire season is now open, find out what our local laws and parks and open space teams are up to.
Melbourne has been receiving an unusual amount of rain in recent weeks coinciding with the spring season. While this is great for the new life blossoming around us, it also means that grass and weeds across the city’s gardens and natures strips are producing a lot of new growth!
Most residential properties are easily maintained with a domestic (push) lawn mower which makes grass easy to cut on small sites. We're also in the process of cutting grass across our parks and open spaces where we can. While we’re working hard to get this done, weather conditions and the explosive new growth it brings has kept us a little behind.
Now that Darebin fire season is officially open, we all need to work together to ensure that fire hazards are kept at a minimum. Our Local Laws team are currently hard at work inspecting properties and issuing fire prevention notices for locations identified as fire hazards. This is to make sure that Darebin’s residents and their properties are protected from the risks of seasonal fires and that we get through this period safely as a community.
While the heavy rains have restricted the use of larger slashers and open space mowing equipment, brushcutting is being carried out wherever possible to reduce any potential risks. The current growth season means an increase in vegetation, but our teams are ready to undertake all necessary works to help keep our community safe.
Remember, being fire ready is a shared responsibility between the government, emergency services and us the community!
