Local Law Review
Published on 13 January 2025
Darebin is reviewing the General Local Law No.1 2015 (Local Law), and you are invited to have your say.
Local Laws help everyone to enjoy Darebin by protecting community health and safety, amenity, and our public spaces and assets. We're looking to modernise our Local Law and address current and emerging issues in Darebin.
The Local Law guides Council’s compliance and enforcement activities for a wide range of topics, including property amenity, community safety, construction sites and the keeping of animals.
Our General Local Law No. 1 2015 will soon expire and needs to be reviewed and replaced by 30 June 2025, to incorporate changes in legislation and to reflect current issues within the municipality.
While our current Local Law has serviced us well, we need to improve our Local Law so that we can manage unreasonable and unsafe behaviour in public places, protect assets and manage amenity.
The draft Community Amenity Local Law 2025 is very different to the current Local Law 2015, because it follows contemporary, best practice models recently adopted across Victoria.
Accessibility has been a focus, aiming to draft a plain language, legal document that clearly and transparently sets out behaviour expectations for residents, businesses and visitors to Darebin.
We’d now like you to share your thoughts on the draft Community Amenity Local Law 2025. Consultation is open until 17 February 2025.
