Appointments with an MCH nurse

Your baby has regular progress check-ups with our Maternal and Child Health nurses, who are always helpful in answering any questions you have.

You and your baby will have 10 appointments with a Maternal and Child Health (MCH) nurse:

• a home visit after your baby is born
• consultations at 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 8 months, 12 months, 18 months, 2 years and 3.5–4 years (morning appointment is preferred for this consultation).

We can arrange additional appointments if you need them. If you're having significant additional problems as a new parent, our MCH nurses can help and will make any necessary referrals to other health services.

You can also call our 24-hour Maternal and Child Health line on 13 22 29 (remember it as 13 BABY).

Please do not attend your MCH centre if you or someone else in your house is unwell. We can arrange a telehealth appointment instead.

Saturday appointments

Appointments are available between 9am and 12pm on Saturdays, however, you need to book in advance. Please schedule your appointment to secure your spot.

What to bring

Bring to every appointment:

• Your My Health, Learning and Development Record – also called the 'green book'.
• Bring any questions you have. Write them down when you think of them and keep them in the green book so you don't forget them.

The green book is given to parents at the hospital where your baby was born. It is where your child's health, learning and development records should be kept. Use the green book to:

• find out about health, wellbeing, safety, learning and development
• learn where you can get more information, services and support for you, your baby and your family
• record growth and immunisations as well as valuable observations about your child’s health, learning and development
• write down questions you want to discuss with the maternal and child health nurse or other health professionals
• write down appointments, immunisations and notes about your baby’s health, wellbeing, safety, learning and development.
