16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a global campaign dedicated to ending gender-based violence. Women and gender diverse people experience high rates of gender-based violence. This campaign aims to raise awareness and provide helpful information to prevent or respond to family and gender-based violence. 

It begins on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25) and ends on International Human Rights Day (December 10) to emphasise that gender-based violence is a violation of human rights.

You can get involved by joining the following community events:

 

Walk Against Family Violence

When: Friday 22 November 2024 11:00am
Where: Birrarung Marr (Upper Terrace), Melbourne

Join the Walk Against Family Violence on Friday 22 November 2024 and create Victorian communities where everyone is safe, equal and respected.

By joining the walk, you can take action to prevent family and gender-based violence and stand in solidarity with victim survivors.

People of all genders are welcome. Bring your workmates, friends, family, chosen family – and even your dogs! Wear orange if you can, bring a water bottle, and don’t forget colourful signs and banners. Look for the Darebin banner!

Healthy Relationships for Women from Migrant and Refugee Communities

When: Tuesday, 26 November 2024, 10.15-11.30am

Join us to hear from the Multicultural Centre for Women’s Health to learn about women's safety, wellbeing and what healthy relationships look like. This event is for all women from migrant and refugee communities. Light refreshments provided.

The Multicultural Centre for Women’s Health (MCWH) is a community-based, not-for-profit organisation led by, for and with women from migrant and refugee backgrounds.

This event will be held in the Preston Library Meeting Room, a private space where you can ask questions in a safe, respectful place.

Intercultural women’s exercise

Free weekly exercise class for women that will introduce you to a range of functional and core strength exercises in a fun, relaxed and supportive environment.

Everyone is welcome and you will be supported to go at your own pace.

Where: East Preston Community Centre, 7 Newton Street, Reservoir
When: Mondays 11 Nov – 9 Dec
Time: 5.30pm-6.30pm

No booking required. Just turn up and join in on the fun. 

Knitting against violence 

When:  Fridays, 22-Nov – 13 Dec 20243pm -4pm
Where: Darebin Intercultural Centre, 350 High Street, Preston
Bookings: Come along on the day, no need to register. Ages 15 and older.
Cost: FREE

Join local fibre artist Andrew Chan, for this relaxed knitting/crochet circle. Take a moment to slow down on a Friday afternoon at this busy time of year. Bring a project along to work on or learn to knit or crochet a simple square from scratch and make a blanket together. Materials provided, no experience necessary.

This gender-inclusive event is in support of 16 Days Against Gender-based Violence.
