Objections

Find out about planning permit objections in Darebin, from viewing other objections to lodging your own objection.

If you think you'll be unreasonably affected by our decision to grant a planning permit, you can lodge a formal objection. The planning process requires us to consider every objection unless an application is exempt from notice and review.

Your objection must:

  • be in writing with your full name, address, phone number and email address
  • state the grounds for your objection
  • state how the granting of the permit will affect you.

You can also suggest any changes to the application that may address your concerns.

Objections are public documents and we can make them available to the applicant and other objectors.

Submitting an objection

To object to a current application, you must complete our objection to grant a planning permit form(PDF, 82KB). You can then lodge your objection by email, post, or in person:

Email: townplanning@darebin.vic.gov.au

Post:

Statutory Planning
Darebin City Council
PO Box 91
Preston, Victoria, 3072

In person:

Visit our Planning Services counter at Level 1, 274 Gower Street, Preston between 8.45am and 4.45pm, Monday to Friday (except public holidays).

Timeframe for objections

When we advertise a planning permit application, the Notice of Application (Public Notice) advises that we won't make our decision for at least 14 days from the date at the bottom of the notice. If you lodge your objection within this time, we we'll be able to consider it.

In reality, we don't decide on most applications immediately after this 14 days, and you will have extra time to lodge an objection. Please contact our planning department if you want to know when we're likely to decide on a planning permit application.

Do some applications not allow objections?

Some planning permit applications are exempt from notice and appeal rights, as outlined in the Darebin Planning Scheme. We don't advertise these applications and there's no opportunity to object.

Viewing objections

We must make all objections available for inspection. You can view an objection free of charge by visiting our office during business hours.

We can also provide copies to interested parties for the sole purpose of allowing consideration and review, under the Planning and Environment Act 1987.

To request a copy of any objections, call our planning department on 03 8470 8850.
