About your bins

Waste bins remain the property of Darebin City Council and must not be moved from the address they are issued to. If you are moving to another address within Darebin, please call our customer service team to let us know before you move and to discuss what happens to your bin.

Charges are payable annually but will be pro-rated based on the application date. The maximum number of additional bins is one additional bin per household, for each bin type.

Applications can only be made if your property receives a Darebin managed waste service. If your property receives a private waste collection, please contact your owner's corporation to discuss additional waste needs. Businesses and commercial properties are not eligible to upsize and must seek a private waste arrangement.

If we provide you with a larger waste bin, it must be used for household waste from the assigned household only. It may not be used for non-household waste, or for the disposal of recyclable materials or green waste.

Special waste needs

We understand that there are some reasons for requiring a larger bin, such as:

  • families with six or more members
  • families with children in nappies (more than 1)
  • households with additional waste for medical reasons

Request a larger waste bin for a medical condition

If you, or someone who lives with you, requires a larger bin for a medical condition you may be entitled to a fee exemption. Larger bin fee exemptions will be assessed to determine eligibility and you will need to renew your permit each year. You will be required to provide a medical certificate.

Request a larger waste bin for large families or children in a nappies

If you are a family with six or more members or with children (more than 1) in nappies you may be entitled to a fee exemption. Larger bin fee exemptions will be assessed to determine eligibility and you will need to renew your permit each year.
