Switch to efficient electric heating
Switching your heating to clean energy is a great step to transition your home to all-electric.
Heating our homes can account for 30% of our energy bill. Those with gas heaters are already paying more for their heating and this is predicted to get worse as gas prices rise.
Gas heating can have negative health impacts too.
Types of electric heating
Not-for-profit Renew’s guide to Staying warm this winter tells you everything you need to know about the many electric heating systems available.
Reverse-cycle air conditioners
Reverse-cycle air conditioners, which are a type of heat pump, are the most cost-effective and energy-efficient way to heat and cool your home. If you already have one in your home for cooling, turn it on for heating in winter instead of your gas heater. Remember to clean your filter often so it runs efficiently.
Running costs will vary according to the location, size of the unit and its star rating, so invest in the best system you can afford. You can get advice about what size unit you need from an installer, or you can use the Fair Air calculator yourself. The size may vary if you’re using the unit mostly for heating rather than cooling. Remember – upfront costs are only one factor: the more stars, the more energy efficient a unit is and the more you will save over time.
Ducted systems for whole-house heating are available but are not as energy efficient as single reverse cycle air-conditioning units. A good air-conditioner installer will be able to help you navigate the various options.
Other options
Hydronic heating powered by an electric heat pump provides radiant heat that some people prefer, but is a more costly option for heating your whole home.
Simple panel or stand-alone electric heaters cost more to run, but can be a good option for occasional use, particularly in a smaller room. Remember to check the stars and make the most of your solar panels if you have them to reduce your energy bills

Victorian Government financial support
The Victorian government is offering homeowners incentives to upgrade to more efficient heating. For example, you could get a $360 rebate for replacing a large gas room heater with an efficient reverse cycle air conditioner.
To qualify you must engage an accredited provider and install an approved product.
