3 Ravens energy efficient beer

3 Ravens is Melbourne's oldest independent brewery and their Thornbury site also contains a bar and co-working space. They take sustainability seriously and have made many major upgrades to their building, plant and equipment.

In mid 2020 they installed a 74kW solar power system on their roof, but before starting they protected the roof with a heat-reflective coating. This not only reflects a significant part of the sun's heat, keeping the building cooler, it also helps preserve the roof sheets and increase their useable lifetime.

In 2023 they undertook a major reworking of the brewery, which involved removing the gas supply and installing a smart heat-transfer system. Brewing beer requires lots of heat in some parts and keeping things cool in others, which requires a lot of energy. But if you install efficient CO2 heat pumps and integrate the brewing process with storage systems and other parts of the building such as the cool-rooms and the office space, you can move energy around the system instead of constantly adding more.

You can watch a short video about some of their upgrades here.
